How to Store & Use GLP-1 Injection Pens Safely — Heal1 Pharmacy, South Bopal, Ahmedabad

GLP-1 pens are temperature-sensitive medicines, so a little care in storing and using them keeps them effective and safe. This is a general how-to — always follow the specific leaflet that comes with your pen and your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.

Prescription-only: Mounjaro, Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus and other GLP-1 medicines are Schedule H drugs. They can only be dispensed against a valid doctor's prescription. Never buy them from unverified online sellers — counterfeit versions are a real and serious danger.

Storing Your Pen

  • Before first use: keep pens in the refrigerator, typically at 2–8°C. Do not freeze — a frozen pen must be thrown away.
  • Protect from light and heat: keep the cap on and store away from direct sunlight.
  • In use: many pens can be kept at controlled room temperature for a limited number of days — check your specific leaflet for the exact limit.
  • Never use a pen that has been frozen, left in the heat, or is past its expiry date.

Injecting Step by Step

Your doctor or pharmacist will show you the first time. In general:

  1. Wash your hands and check the pen (correct medicine, dose, not expired, liquid clear).
  2. Attach a new needle if your pen uses one.
  3. Choose a site — stomach, thigh or upper arm — and clean the skin.
  4. Inject as instructed, hold for the recommended few seconds, then remove.
  5. Note the date so you keep to your once-weekly schedule.

Never share a pen with anyone else, even with a new needle.

Rotating Injection Sites

Use a slightly different spot each week to avoid lumps or skin changes. Many people rotate between the stomach, thighs and upper arms.

Disposing of Needles Safely

Used needles are sharps. Put them straight into a puncture-proof sharps container (or a sturdy sealed plastic container if a sharps bin is not available) — never in the regular bin loose. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of a full container safely.

Travel & Courier

  • Carry pens in an insulated bag with a cool pack for journeys — but avoid direct contact with ice, which can freeze them.
  • When flying, keep pens in your hand luggage with the prescription/label, not in checked baggage where it may freeze.
  • Courier: Heal1 Pharmacy packs temperature-sensitive medicines with proper cold-chain care for delivery across India. Message us to arrange it.
